According to various newspaper articles, some of the top new years resolutions for 2012 include exercising more, losing weight, spending more time with friends and family, and saving money. I have a new years resolution suggestion that can kill all of those birds with one stone. Resolve to recreate in the outdoors more in 2012!
Outdoor recreational activities always involves some level of physical activity. Even low-key activities such as dog-walking or fishing are considered exercise. Increasing the amount of time that you spend outdoors could increase your overall level of physical activity and therefore contribute to weight loss. Additionally, recreational activities are an excellent way to get family and friends together for some quality time. Taking the family on a hike or a snowshoe allows for time to talk and have fun together in an atmosphere that is away from distractions such as cellphones, computers, and televisions. Organizing a weekend camping trip with a group of friends is a wonderful way to relax and recharge after a busy work week. Finally, participating in outdoor recreation is much cheaper than many other forms of entertainment or exercise. Spending time in the outdoors is free! Although the gear required to participate in outdoor recreation can be expensive at times, many local sports retailers rent out equipment. Why spend money on a gym membership when you can walk or run at the local park? Taking a family to an amusement park can cost hundreds of dollars; a family trip to a nearby national park is much cheaper and will providing a more enriching experience.
So instead of just picking one very specific new years resolutions for 2012. Why not select a new years resolution that encompasses all of the popular choices and will make you a more well-rounded individual overall. Spending more times recreating in the outdoors will make you happier, healthier, and your wallet heavier.
